Reflection
Looking back over Planetary Curios' long and ongoing development there are things I would have done differently or wish that I had been able to do differently. Chief among them being that, despite Planetary Curios unparalleled success amongst my other projects, I was unable give it the attention and development time it deserved due to other projects and obligations.
Due to its less strictly defined design goal of "mini-dlc", Planetary Curios was also more prone to feature creep during early development. Compared to previous projects such as
More Liberations which had significantly narrower and more focused aims, Planetary Curios had a bit more bloat which perhaps could have been trimmed.
Despite this the mod's success has been reassuring, and is now the gold standard to which I hold my other professional projects.
Design
Planetary Curios was originally designed to function as a 'mini-dlc' for Stellaris with a focus on exploration elements within the game. It was primarily inspired by the official Distant Stars and Ancient Relics DLCs. The dig site mechanic added in Ancient Relics was of particular interest as it presented appealing opportunities for exploration and narrative storytelling.
The relic included upon release, the Mawlurk Egg, was designed from a "mechanics first" standpoint by reviewing the relics included in the official DLC, making note of any unexplored design space. Consequently a relic focused around armies was developed and iterated on, resulting in the Mawlurk Egg. A prior iteration had its passive and active effects swapped, however this was changed to make gaining the unique army units feel more meaningful.
